Leadership can make honesty feel expensive

The earliest stage of a business is visibly uncertain. Later, expectations arrive: the team needs confidence, customers need reliability and family members may assume momentum means security. A founder can become surrounded by people while losing the space to say, "I do not know." That is the lonely middle.

Imposter feelings often grow in that silence. A difficult week becomes evidence that you were never qualified, while everyone else's polished update becomes evidence that they are. The comparison is structurally unfair: your internal draft against someone else's public edit.

Build a support portfolio

One person rarely provides every kind of support. Create a small portfolio: a peer who understands founder decisions, a friend who knows you outside the business, an adviser who can challenge the plan and a qualified professional for mental-health care when needed. Name the role each relationship plays so every conversation does not carry every need.

Schedule connection before a crisis. A monthly founder walk or fortnightly voice note exchange can be more useful than waiting until you have the energy to explain a breakdown from the beginning.

Change the question

Instead of asking "Do I belong here?", ask "What does this moment require me to learn?" Belonging questions invite a verdict on your identity. Learning questions create a next step. Keep an evidence file with customer notes, decisions handled well and problems you learned to solve. It is not a folder of empty praise; it is a more accurate record than memory under stress.

Make room for conversations that are not immediately productive. Connection, leisure and low-stress activities are recognised parts of caring for mental health. You do not have to turn every dinner, walk or hobby into networking.

Let support be practical

Ask peers for specific forms of help: review this hiring decision, sit with me while I write the difficult email, introduce me to someone who has seen this stage, or remind me what I said mattered before the launch became chaotic. Practical support interrupts isolation because it changes the conditions around you, not only your mood.

If low mood, anxiety, loss of interest, sleep disruption or difficulty functioning persists, talk with a qualified mental-health professional or primary-care provider. You are allowed to seek care before the business looks stable enough to justify it. You are part of the company's future, not a resource it gets to consume.
